I'd see this WATCHMEN movie

The WATCHMAN is definitely in my top ten of favorite books. I read it in high school and it just blew me away. I revisited it again a couple of years ago and I was afraid it wouldn't hold up, but you know what - it did. But regardless, I don't think I'll see the new movie because there's just no way it could compare to my imaginations interpretation. Plus, the director, Zack Snyder is a hit or miss director. The Dawn of the Dead remake was flawless but "300" was a boring snooze fest, with a souless narrative and too much slow-mo. And the trailers for WATCHMEN, kind of hint that Zack Snyder is again got his finger stuck on the slo-mo effect button. And I don't know if it's just me but I get an empty feeling about the whole thing. Maybe, I'm wrong, and it does seem to be that people who haven't read the book enjoy the movie more than those who did. But I would watch this animated WATCHMEN movie.

Yesterday was a very productive day. I completed ten new works of art. I'm trying my best to refine my style and keep it fresh. Although, I re-use the same stencils, each new piece is a reflection and expression of my desire to challenge myself to work within my limitations of what I have on hand. I added some new colors to my palette and did a new stencil of Chet baker that I think turned out pretty good. I'll be downtown today at State and Washington from 12pm to 3pm today selling these babies. Wish me luck.Music Is For Lovers

Inside peak at new work

Here's a new painting that's been keeping me busy. It has an obvious comic book feel but I really spent time figuring out a different color palette variation than the one typically associated with comics. I wanted to keep the primary color feel but with some variation in character. The colors are an update of the comic theme. Kind of pastel in nature. Slightly, muted. You'll see why I did this as I get closer to finishing it.

When working on a painting I try to bring in outside influences as much as possible, like what I'm reading, what music I'm digging and of course what films I'm watching. While working on this painting I was reading "The Devil In The White City." I challenged myself to try and imagine how landscape architect Olmstead would color a comic book. Yeah, it sounds pretentious but it's true.

Mickey Rourke acceptance speech @ Indy Spirit Awards

Anyone who knows me, knows I love Mickey Rourke. He's been my favorite contemporary American actor since I was a kid and saw him in the movie "Body Heat." He's only in it for a little bit but he steals the fuckin movie playing a level headed arsonist. I even did a painting of him a couple of years ago. I used a still from the movie "Rumble Fish" in which he played Motorcycle Boy, a color blind, former gang leader, who is starting to slip into psychosis.

When I displayed the painting everyone was like, "why did you do a painting of him? He's a joke." And I was constantly having to school people on why he deserved a painting. So, I was glad to see him make a come back. Although, I know he never went anywhere. He still made quality appearances in some fine films in the last decade i.e. - Rainmaker, Animal Factory, Spun, Sin City and Buffalo 66, to name a few.

With all of the positive attention Mickey Rourke received, I was able to finally sell my painting of him for a decent price. I'm happy about that but I'm bummed as hell he didn't win the Oscar. But I knew he'd blown his chance. Weeks before the Academy Awards, he was on "Larry King Live," talking about making an appearance at Wrestlemania 25 to fight against Chris Jericho. His publicist went ape shit on him and had to work overtime to deny the statement. But overnight what everyone thought was a sure thing, him winning the Oscar, went the other way in Sean Penn's favor.
Oh well. But at least we get this great acceptance speech at the "Spirit Awards. ENJOY!
